Hiero reigns as one of the most influential and skillful crews of the 90s,
without question. Their doorway to the industry was initially opened in
’91 by Del, whose debut album “I Wish My Brother George Was Here” was
produced by The Boogieman (Suave and the legendary DJ Pooh) and Ice Cube.
Once the albums second single hit he was already introducing his crew on
the posse cut “Burnt”. At the same time, the crew was also starting to
solidify themselves as more than capable of handling their own production
with nearly everyone in the crew a master of the sampler.
By the time ’93 hit, Del released his second album for Elektra, which was
primarily produced by the Hiero crew and showed a noticeable growth of
lyricism. Meanwhile, Jive Records, had secured deals with Souls Of Mischief
(Opio, Tajai, Phesto, & A+), Casual, and Extra Prolific (Snupe & Mike G).
This led to Souls Of Mischief certified classic album, “93 Till
Infinity”. Plus help set the stage for solid debuts in ’94 in Casuals
“Fear Itself” & Extra Prolific’s “Like It Should Be”. Thru all
this the final piece of the puzzle, Pep Love, was lacing albums and b-sides
with verses like a champ that were an “unbelievable pleasure”, making
him the one to watch.
Combine the steady flow of albums, b-sides, remix and guest appearances
with non-stop touring, business savvy, and the continued focus of becoming
aself-contained unit eventually saw the birth of their own label/indie
empire, Hiero Imperium (circa ’96). This established them as pioneers of
a new indie movement of artists who were able to leave the majors behind
and continue to grow and succeed on their own terms.
Every since then they’ve continued to release a steady flow of music from
their core foundation (Del, Souls Of Mischief, Casual, & Pep Love) as well
as release some quality projects from up-comers and established vets alike
(O.C., Encore, Musab, Z-Man, etc…).
In 2010, things are still in full gear; there’s a handful of new albums,
a steady stream of free downloads, continuous tour/show dates, exclusive
merch and so on. The crew will be rocking the Soundset in full effect;
Domino will be previewing some new beats at the LRB Producers showcase and
Del, Souls Of Mischief, Casual, and Pep Love will be tearing down the main
stage! Don’t miss out…
Catch them on the main stage Sunday, May 30th at Soundset!
